Vieste
It is the most eastern city of the promontory of Gargano and of the province of Foggia. The particular urban layout of Vieste is linked to the karst nature of the Gargano promontory, characterized by rocky layers often eroded by marine action. In fact, the nucleus of the inhabited area rises on a small rocky peninsula, more or less symmetrical, particular due to its three bays separated by two spikes of land. On one side Punta di San Francesco, facing east, steep and rocky: this is where the medieval center is located, as this part of the peninsula offered the best security features. In this part, rich in alleys, staircases and arches, you can find most of prestigious historical buildings (St. Francis Church, the cathedral). Punta di Santa Corce, facing north, is instead lower than the other one. In this relatively flat area, the town began to expand only towards the nineteenth century. The formation of new neighborhoods later led the city's life (new town hall, municipal park, church of Santa Croce, etc.) to gravitate more and more towards this part. It is here that you find Vieste's port, still important for fishing activities and sea traffic towards the Tremiti Islands, Croatia and Manfredonia, which is only 50 km away. Between the two tips you will find the small beach of Marina piccola, facing the lighthouse (where bathing is forbidden). On the south side of Punta San Francesco you will find the long sandy beach of Pizzomunno that begins with the limestone rocks on which the city was built and extends south in the direction of Pugnochiuso. To the west of Punta Santa Croce, instead, you can find the equally long beach of San Lorenzo, which unlike the first, is still fairly rich of free beaches. It begins with the urban area built from the nineteenth century (port area) extending then towards the west, in the direction of Peschici
