Naples and surroundings

Naples is one of the cities with the highest density of cultural resources and monuments in the world, which testify to the historical-artistic evolution. The historical center, in 1995, was included by UNESCO among the heritage of humanity with the following motivation: «It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, whose contemporary urban fabric preserves the elements of its history rich in events. The traces of its streets, the richness of its historic buildings characterizing different eras give the site a universal value without equal, which has had a profound influence on much of Europe and beyond its borders ». It is the result of overlapping architectural styles enclosed in about 2800 years of history, thus witnessing the various civilizations that have stayed there. All these factors have given him a universal value without equal. On a relatively small area there are, among others, a large number of castles, royal residences, monumental palaces, historic churches and remains from the classical age. The legacy of this millenary history can still be admired throughout the city and its surroundings, which make the city of Naples an open-air museum in all respects. The area affected by the protection includes 14 neighborhoods. Avvocata, Montecalvario, San Giuseppe, Porto, Pendino, Mercato, Chiaia, San Ferdinando, Stella, San Carlo all'Arena, San Lorenzo and Vicaria and part of the Vomero and Posillipo hills. The quarters of San Giuseppe, Porto, Pendino, Mercato, San Lorenzo and Vicarìa, specifically, constitute the ancient nucleus, corresponding largely to the area of the decumans. However, the scarce valorization and the lack of funds for possible restorations, means that part of this patrimony, in particular that corresponding to the ancient center, or to the area of the decumani, ruins or in a state of degradation the churches that only in historical center have serious structural problems, as many buildings; but also fountains, obelisks, ancient architecture, etc.). To overcome this problem, an agreement signed between the Campania region, the municipality and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, meant that the European Union allocated 100 million euros in June 2012 to carry out restoration work on the monuments of the historic center most at risk. .
